Ride on Bill

Hannah provided training and instruction for us today, during our lesson time. Really enjoyable for me, part of the lesson I was riding Bill, and I have not ridden a different horse for a few years! It was good to be able to watch Hannah riding Mara and to change up my mount. I’m thankful for my horse adventures.

Walk Around

It was a cold but sunny afternoon visit for Mara and me today. We spent much of our time together investigating the stable grounds. The operation to make stall bedding from the corn husks is still under way, and the production pile was huge. We strolled through the corn field to enjoy the late day sun (however we did see some orange jackets up on the hill) and visited horses in the back paddocks. Mara B is definitely getting a thick winter coat!

Paddock Play and Mailboxes

It was a good horse day this Monday. We have our pal Gus back in our paddock and I’ve been entertained watching Gus and Mara each try to be in charge of the “new mare” in the herd! Very fun to observe the horse behaviors. Mara and I then rode down the quiet neighborhood street and only confronted mailboxes and one dog. It was pleasant to be out with no orange jackets in sight. Wrapping up our ride we stopped to watch Ray and Beau, practice loading and backing out of their trailer. Many morning activities going on at River Brink today.

Stable Grounds

The note on the message board explains why we are now restricted to riding in the indoor arena or only on the stable grounds. Mara and I did ride out, and we did see many orange jackets out in the fields. So staying right around the stable we visited horses in adjoining paddocks and even had a chance to greet Peanut today.

Reflection

Mara Moments posts show how a daily connection with my horse provides me with a creative healing activity while also promoting equine therapy. In addition I have been trying to give voice to Suicide Awareness and Prevention by sharing my healing journey as a suicide survivor. I find it important to be a part of a broader discussion of depression, mental health, isolation and trauma. Today is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day 2017. The loss of life and the toll on suicide survivors in incalculable. Starting with this awareness and gentle reminder of the dangers of untreated mental illness, let’s please contribute in our own way to help reduce suicides. Thank you.

Mara B is my wonderful therapy horse and I am very grateful for her. Today she was true therapy.

An Addition

Starting in the round pen for Mara to stretch her legs and expend energy has been working well for us lately, it’s what we did today. Then we headed up to the cow pasture and found the new addition which signals big changes for our outings. Riding up and then back down from the cow pasture is good excerise for Mara and I like the views. A good ride for us, cool temps but calm winds.

Half Outside Half Inside

Mara B met me at the gate this morning, that’s always a nice way to start our time together. Half of our ride time was in the back where we saw the operation for making stall bedding from corn husks. (Very cool I think.) We also walked the cut cornfield. Barn pal Brutus then joined us for our inside ride time and made my day. Brutus had never done that before, and I thought it was pretty sweet.

Quiet Mist

Quiet misty morning at River Brink for us today. The paddocks were peaceful, and the birds were hanging out in the shelters. Mara and I had good slow quiet connection time. We played  in the arena with a few obstacles and I rode with no stirrups as my little challenge.

Golden Fields Golden Light

A late afternoon ride in the corn field provided perfect golden light to capture today’s Mara Moments. Luckily Jay was with us and hiked along to be our photographer. Fun to now have these fields available to ride in once again. Mara was as warm as the golden light.

Routine Change

It’s refreshing to occasionally change up our day to day routine. So Mara B had rest and a break from me today. Instead Mara had time with Hannah.  Different experiences allowed us both to focus on new things today, a fun switch.
